The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals is formed

*On this date in 1976, the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) is celebrated. OBAP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of minorities in all aviation and aerospace careers.

Thirty-eight African American pilots and aviation industry pioneers, representing nearly 50% of the worldwide minority-pilot population, convened in Chicago to address the apparent lack of diversity and inclusion in the airline industry. We honor these founders, who, facing danger in multiple wars and the weight of gender inequality and strained race relations, held an unwavering commitment to their careers and the mission of OBAP.

Their courage and determination in the face of adversity are at the very foundation of our organization's legacy. Their networking, mentorship, and professional development enhance career advancement. Additionally, they aim to bolster cognizance of aviation within the UNO and Omaha communities.

Data shows that the industry is not as diverse as the general population or the US workforce. UNOBAP yearns to change that narrative by increasing minority participation in the industry's recruitment and retention efforts.
