Life can change forever in the blink of an eye.
We think we have time
When there was never a promise
yet we see time as forever
enough to continue to
do what’s been done
continue to believe
that rehearsal is one
way to do it right next time.
Rush to and fro
believing in control
while
we deceive us/you/me.
justifying the reality
we want to see
Choosing to let go
of those who love
for what we think is better.
It’s never. At least rarely ever
not the same as before
yet we choose to ignore…
Our actions define us
speaking loud and clear.

Assume the position
From the moment you emerged
Cryin’ as though you already knew
That you might be exchanging
One temporary confinement
For another.
Being black, being male
Totally out of your control
But you came anyway..

Assume the position
That being black and poor
And stayin’ in the “hood”
While your mamma’s prayin’
And she should
Though she done all she would
Not knowing that she could
Question
Why you were left back and put in that “special class”…
when you could read the cereal boxes at age two.
But you..

Peering out of half-lidded eyes
