The First Black Eagle Scout in America

Hamilton Bradley

*On this date in 1919, the first Black youth became an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.

Hamilton Bradley of New York became the earliest known Black Eagle Scout in BSA history.

According to newspaper records from when his Eagle Scout court of honor was held, he completed his board of review sometime before that date.

This indicates that Bradley earned the Eagle Scout Award nine months before Harry Cooper and years before Edgar Cunningham.
