Anne Hampton
*Anne Hampton was born on this date in 1808. She was a free Black domestic and chef.
She was raised in Hudson Falls, New York, and was of African, Indigenous, and European ancestry. In 1829, she married Solomon Northup, and she gave birth to their children Elizabeth in 1831, Margaret in 1833, and Alonzo Northup in 1835. She was known for her culinary expertise, using her cooking skills to make money while her husband worked as a violinist.
From 1841 to 1853, her husband was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana, and he returned to his family with the help of Samuel Bass and their family friends. While Northup gave book talks following his freedom, Anne worked in Bolton Landing on Lake George and lived with Margaret and Philip Stanton in Moreau, Saratoga County. She returned to culinary work, moved to Kingsbury, New York, in 1875, and died in Moreau in 1876.
