Charles S. Schaeffer

*Charles S. Schaeffer was born on this date in 1830. He was a white American soldier and educator.

Charles (Charlie") Stoever Schaeffer was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, to John and Sarah Stoever Schaeffer. He fought for the Union Army in the American Civil War and rose quickly in rank with the 1st Delaware Volunteers. During the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, Schaeffer was wounded but commended by his superiors for his bravery. Records indicate that Schaeffer was discharged on June 27, 1864, due to a disability resulting from an unknown injury.

After the war, he taught at Normal Schools in Pennsylvania. He and Ada (Addie) August Smart were married on November 28, 1872. Ada and Charles had two children. Their first child was Charles Harrison Schaeffer, and their second child was Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" Schaeffer. By May 1897, Charles filed as an invalid to collect a US Civil War Pension. He died on May 5, 1899, in Pennsylvania after undergoing several operations, having lived to be 69 years old. He was buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA.
