The First Black Eagle Scout in America

Hamilton Bradley

*On this date in 1919, the first Black youth became an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.

Hamilton Bradley of New York became the earliest known Black Eagle Scout in BSA history.

According to newspaper records from the time, his Eagle Scout court of honor was held, meaning he completed his board of review sometime before that date.

This indicates that Bradley earned the Eagle Scout Award at least nine months before Harry Cooper and years before Edgar Cunningham.
