The First Black Woman Coaches a Division 1 Men’s Basketball Team

On this date in 1990, Bernadette Locke, the first Black woman, was hired as an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky in Division I NCAA basketball.

Locke was born in Lockwood, TN. She was a former All-American at the University of Georgia, where she earned a B.A. in Education and worked as an assistant coach for four years.

Locke then served as head coach of the University of Kentucky women’s basketball program from 1995 to 2003.
