Olive Chapel A.M.E. Church is Founded

Olive Chapel A.M.E. Church

*Olive Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church is celebrated on this date in 1853.

The Reverend Jordan Winston Early founded the congregation. Services began in a private home. Also known as Olive Chapel AME Church, it is a historic church at 309 S. Harrison Avenue in Kirkwood, Missouri. It is the oldest Protestant church in Kirkwood. The church building, constructed in 1899, originally housed the Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church/Peace Lutheran Church.

The Olive Chapel AME congregation bought it in 1923. This Black Church still has its original bell, pews, and stained-glass windows. The congregation previously worshipped in a small stone building at 330 West Washington Avenue. The West Washington address was also the site of Kirkwood's first public education classes for black students in 1867.

The Quinette Cemetery was associated with this church from 1866 until 2002. Olive Chapel was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 20, 2004.
