Robert Chew
*Robert F. Chew was born on this date in 1960. He was a Black actor and acting coach.
He graduated from Patterson Park High School in Baltimore, Maryland, and then studied music at Morgan State University. Chew acted in plays nationwide and taught young actors for many years. Known best for playing drug kingpin Proposition Joe on the HBO crime saga “The Wire,” Chew also appeared on "Homicide" and "The Corner," as well as teaching and mentoring young actors at Baltimore's Arena Players Youth Theatre.
He received all three roles through the Pat Moran casting agency. Chew also worked with children's theatre companies, including Playworks USA. Through his association with the Arena Players, the Moran agency began to turn to Chew for help casting local young actors for the show.
Robert Chew died on Jan. 17, 2013, of apparent heart failure in his hometown of Baltimore. He was 52 years old and was survived by two other sisters, Tanya Chew and Maureen Little, and his mother, Henrietta Chew.
