Union Baptist Church (Baltimore)
*Union Baptist Church (Baltimore) was founded on this date in 1852. This historic Baptist church is at 1219 Druid Hill Avenue in central Baltimore, Maryland.
In 1866, the Lewis Street congregation merged with Saratoga Street African Baptist Church members, forming Union Baptist Church. The granite church was designed by architect William J. Beardsley and built-in 1905 under the leadership of Rev. Harvey Johnson. From 1872 to 1923, Rev. Johnson was a minister and a prominent voice for civil rights.
The Gothic Revival structure features steeply pitched roofs, lancet windows, and distinctive buttressing on the front facade to support the walls on a constrained lot size. The church was built for a predominantly African American congregation; its building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
