Church Bombing in Alabama Kills Four Black Children

Collins, Westley, McNair, and Robertson

*On his date in 1963, four Black schoolgirls were killed in a bombing at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. Addie Collins, Denise McNair, Carol Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley were the victims.

This act of racial violence galvanized the American Civil Rights movement. Two murderers are dead (Thomas Blanton Jr. and Bobby Frank Cherry while in prison for the crime), and the other two were indicted earlier that year.
