First Black Man Wins American Football’s Outland Trophy

Calvin Jones on SI

*On this date in 1955, Calvin Jones became the first Black college football player to win the Outland Trophy as the best linebacker in America.

Jones was also the first college football player to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated's September 27, 1954, issue, which was its seventh issue. In 1955, Jones was named Iowa's team captain.

Though Iowa struggled to a 3–5–1 record, Jones was named a consensus first-team All-American for the second consecutive year. As a lineman, Jones also finished tenth in the balloting for the Heisman Trophy.
