Byron De La Beckwith, Murderer Is Convicted

Byron De La Beckwith

*On this date in 1994, white-American Byron De La Beckwith was convicted of killing civil rights activist Medgar Evers after thirty-one years.

On June 12, 1963, Evers was getting out of his car at his home when he was shot in the back. Though Beckwith was arrested for the crime, two all-white juries could not reach a verdict in 1964. Beckwith was finally convicted of the murder. He remained in prison until his death in 2001 at age 80.
