It was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church and is affiliated with several preparatory schools in various parts of Louisiana. New Orleans University originally opened at Camp and Race streets in New Orleans.
In 1868, it moved to St. Charles Avenue near Jefferson Avenue. New Orleans University operated until it merged with Straight College in 1934 to form Dillard University.
