New Orleans University founded

*The founding of New Orleans University is celebrated on this date in 1868.  They were a historically black college (HBCU) in Louisiana. 

It was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church and affiliated with a number of preparatory schools located in various parts of the state of Louisiana. New Orleans University originally opened at Camp and Race streets in New Orleans.

In 1868, it moved to St. Charles Avenue near what is presently Jefferson Avenue.  New Orleans University operated until it merged with Straight College in 1934 to form Dillard University
